Letters and pocket diary of Theophilus M. Magaw, including 16 letters that he wrote to his brother and sister from Oct. 1861 to Aug. 1865, a pocket diary covering the period from January to August of 1865, and 5 letters that Magaw wrote to his sister from Kansas in 1890-1891. There is also a typescript copy of the Civil War diary of Sylvester Daniels (1828-1908) of Inland, Cedar Co., Iowa, who served in Co. E 11th Regiment of Iowa Volunteers as a musician and stretcher bearer. After the Civil War, Daniels moved to California. Also included is a copy of Dr. Walter Evans' lecture notes on Magaw and Daniels presented at a meeting of the Civil War Round Table of San Gabriel Valley in March, 1967 in Pasadena, Calif. There are also transparencies of the related maps and photographs.

In 1861, Theophilus M. Magaw, of Fairhaven, Preble County, Ohio, enlisted in Co. D of the 47th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. In 1861-1862, the regiment served in West Virginia, and from Jan. 1863 to June, 1865, it was attached to the 15th Army Corps. Magaw took part in the operations in the Kanawha Valley, Vicksburg Campaign, Chattanooga, Atlanta, Sherman's March to the Sea, and the campaign of the Carolinas. He was honorably discharged in August 1865. After the war, Magaw moved to Kansas. ...
